Chances are by now you’ve heard from someone that you should be watching NBC’s Friday Night Lights. So why aren’t you? It’s hands down the best show on TV. Hands up the best too. No matter who you are, I’m going to tell you why you should be tuning in. So read below, send this post to everyone you know, and then cross your fingers for a season 4. If you’re already sold, head on over to Hulu and you’ll be hooked and caught up before you know it.
Fellas →
Hot chicks - The ladies of FNL have been well documented throughout the blogosphere, and I’ll defer to my friends for more pics of the beauties.
Football – The in-game action is so well filmed that you’ll find yourself invested in the matchup and pulling for a Panthers victory. When they lose, you’ll feel like your team just lost, giving you that empty feeling. That’s powerful TV. Better yet, FNL is guaranteed to give you 32% more high school glory days dreams featuring head coach Eric Taylor motivating you with his “clear eyes, full hearts, CAN’T LOSE” cheer. Maybe another post can detail the dream I had where I missed a block and then Smash William’s collarbone got broken because of it. That wasn’t very glory days. I digress…
Ladies →
Tim Riggins – Considering my mom, sister, and girlfriend all gush over him the same way, there must be something about the show’s beer drinking bad ass. I asked each of those three why they like Riggins, here’s what they said:
HE’S HOT
He embodies what every girl age 14-55 wants
His picture is in the dictionary next to the word ‘man’
TIM RIGGINS!!!!!!!!!!
Documentary-style filming - Dudes like the show’s one-shot style as well, but girls surveyed for this article each brought it up after Tim Riggins. This method gives the show a documentary feel rather than an over-produced 6 angles per scene style. Just watch and you’ll see.
Believable relationships - Connie Britton’s portrayal of coach’s wife Tami Taylor is both likeable and relatable to moms everywhere. The working mother’s relationships with her husband, daughter, and community make for some good TV.
Teens →
I won’t claim to be an expert on teenage TV, but I’m pretty sure the high school drama is way more realistic than that on 90210 and Gossip Girl. Don’t worry - they still drink, skip school, have sex, fight with their parents, cheat on significant others, flirt with teachers, go to strip clubs (Varsity Blues!), and stress over getting into college.
Parents →
While I doubt there are a lot of parents that visit my site (holler if you’re out there), I figured I should cover all of my potential bases for the sake of FNL. Rather than guessing, I just asked my parents why they love the show. Here’s what they said:
Father YepYep
Coach Taylor - He reminds me a great deal (only updated) of my own high school football coach…someone you’re a little afraid of but at the same time someone you know is in your corner when you need him.
Issues - I think the program portrays many of the challenges teenagers face: boyfriend/girlfriend issues, fitting-in socially, partying, and trying to figure out what’s next in life. (Editor’s note: he’s showing his age with the usage of the word “program”)
Nostalgia - Having grown up in a small, isolated town, I understand the importance of high school sports can have on such a community.
Mother YepYep
I love the relationship of the Mom and Dad
Riggins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Editor’s note: yes, that’s my mom swooning over Dillon High School’s starting fullback)
OK Then →
So that’s it. Start watching. Spread the word. I guarantee you’ll like it. I’ve never watched a show with so many intriguing characters that you truly feel for. No matter the story line, you’ll be yearning for more at the end of each hour episode.

Because of all the hype, I rented a DVD with episodes from Season One and the show was nothing special. Yes, the girls are prtty–improbably so, like the Baywatch lifeguards. No, the dialogue didn’t sound like teens, in Texas or ANYwhere except tv soap land and the thing was no Twin Peaks or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, (no levels or irony)–and I realized that the people pimping the show must have friends working on it.
Best drama on TV. I’m 50 yrs old, with two daughters, and a gorgeous wife (why didn’t you mention that Tami is smokin’ hot?? It’s not just the young ones who are gorgeous), and this show brings so many aspects of marriage and parenting into stark, illuminating relief. The marriage is the most realistic shown on TV. The crap between teen daughter Julie and mom Tami and dad Eric is very true to life. I actually think the show is hurt by the focus on Riggins’ hotness; he’s a helluva complex character, as is Tyra, and Lila, and all of ‘em, best of all Saracen. The supporting cast–espec Saracen’s grandma, Smash’s mom, Coach Mac, and OMG Buddy! is just phenomenal. I’ve been watching TV closely and critically for decades, and this is surely one of the best dramas, period.
J Robison has NO TASTE! the show rocks and is the best thing on tv!!!!
i completely disagree with james. believe it or not, none of us know anyone working on the show. we are simply just a few of the people within a small but extremely loyal audience who hope FNL garners some much deserved attention and recognition. like chris mentions above, the depth and complexity of each character is amazing, regardless of whether they are in a lead or supporting role. bottom line: there is not and never will be another show like this, so let’s fight to keep it on air!

J Robinson is a douche. “Its no Buffy” is all the proof you need. This show is legit, highly addictive.
