Growing up I had an obsession with building forts in the woods – bridges, roofs, walls, traps, and whatever else a kid could come up with.  Due to this fascination, many of my favorite movies at the time included a bad ass home base that was built with whatever resources could be found.  So this list doesn’t include any missile-proof super fortresses, just those structures that you’d hope to build if you wake up in a post-apocalyptic world.

Mad Max 2:  The Road Warrior – The Oil Rig Fortress

One of my favorite movies of all time, Max (a normal Mel Gibson) enters this compound with hopes of scoring some gas for his car.  Plot aside, this base was strong enough to withhold Lord Humungus and his goons, mostly thanks so the flame thrower at the front gate.  Below is the boomerang scene from the movie, which has plenty of fortress shots.

Hook – The Lost Boys’ Base in Neverland

Who can forget when Rufio rode around on his sail skateboard track to the chant of “Rufio,  Rufio, Roo-fee-oooooooooooooo!”  This place was the ultimate jungle tree house compound, and I’d move there now if I could.

Robin Hood:  Prince Of Thieves – Robin’s hideout in the Forest of Sherwood

When Robin motivated Little John and his followers to stand up against the Sheriff of Nottingham, the resulting tree city was awesome.  It’s essentially what the Lost Boys’ base would look like if they were in a dark forest rather than fantasy land.  Couldn’t find any media of the base online, so here’s a fan-made trailer to refresh your memory of the movie.

No Escape – The Insiders’ Fortress

In what I’d say is his best performance, Ray Liotta stars as a convict that is sent to an island inhabited by prisoners and finds refuge with a group called “The Insiders.”  These guys built a fort that looks like a Civil War era base in a Lost-like setting.  This clip gives a quick look into the city they built from nothing that resembles something you may see at a Medieval Fair.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Abandoned Subway

Everyone knows that the Turtles lived in the sewers and ate pizza in their abandoned subway station home, which was featured in the second and third movies.  Probably not what you’d call a fort, but still a sweet home base that makes kids consider running away into the sewers.  Anyway, do you remember this video?

Again, couldn’t find any specific media online for the subway station, so thought some Vanilla Ice would suffice as entertainment.
